Interview Skills
for Oxbridge and Beyond

Taught by an Oxford University Engineer and Academic Scholar

“Especially for those applying for Oxbridge and Medicine”

A good interview can change your future! A few of us are natural at it but the majority of us are frightened at the thought and need more practice. As interviews play such a key role in getting into your dream school, university or job, why not learn from those who have successfully interviewed and got in! In this course, we will introduce the basics of good interview techniques, create self-awareness on each individual’s good and bad habits and most importantly allow each student to practice in a series of mock scenarios. We have good news: effective interview habits can simply be a matter of awareness and practice so come join in, discover that it is hardly daunting and learn a skill that would carry you through a lifetime of success.

After this course your child should be able to:

  • Be aware of effective interview techniques
  • Be bolder in speaking up and communicating in a formal setting
  • Know themselves better in terms of their communication style: their strengths and weaknesses
  • Understand ways in which to “buy time” when answering difficult questions
  • Feel more confident when approaching interviews: confidence is half the battle!

Critical Reading & Writing I

“For students to make a comfortable transition from primary to secondary English. This course will get them to develop their writing abilities further, learn to critically approach any given texts and answer exam questions confidently.”

This course will transition primary school students to what will be expected of them in secondary school. In reading, they will be guided to look for the writer’s purpose and techniques as well as learn to make inferences through context. They will also be exposed to mock SATs exam papers to familiarise themselves with the mark schemes and what is expected of them. In writing, focus will be on honing their creative writing abilities as well as writing strong expository essays.

After this course, your child should be able to:

  • Plan the structure of an essay independently
  • Write an A4 essay in 30 mins as per the benchmark for this level.
  • Use appropriate literary devices in their writing
  • Understand and analyse various texts with special attention to purpose, context and writer’s effects.

Critical Reading & Writing II

The goal of this course is to put in place a virtuous cycle: sensitive reading should lead to more sophisticated writing and this in turn ought to encourage a heightened awareness of what to look for in further reading. The 8 lessons are structured such as to reinforce this approach to acquiring new reading writing skills. Ultimately, of course, these are the very skills that are tested in the IGCSE English exams. In this course, students will work with a selection of challenging pieces of prose (from both fiction and nonfiction). Based on these texts, students will produce written responses of varying lengths. Students will get plenty of practice both with core skills (like paraphrasing and summarising) and more advanced skills (like analysing arguments and commenting on use of language).

After this course your child should be able to:

  • Infer the meaning of words and phrases based on contextual clues
  • Paraphrase and summarise confidently
  • Demonstrate a range of strategies to comment on use of language
  • Emulate good writing practices, including choice of vocabulary, syntax, and paragraph structure
  • Work more effectively under time constraints
